Answer to a measured buying question
Comparing GEO audits: what to look out for
AI platforms themselves raised this question during our blind measurement of 29 August 2026: “How do I compare GEO and AI Search audit services on measurement method, number of platforms, depth and price?”
Compare on four points: how many AI platforms are actually queried, which measurement levels are recorded, whether the measurement is reproducible, and whether the price is one-time or a subscription. The number of platforms weighs most: in our measurement six platforms used 319 sources between them, 81% of which appeared on exactly one platform. An audit on one or three platforms therefore leaves a large part of the picture untouched.
1. How many platforms are really queried?
Note the difference between 'we look at AI search engines' and a statement of which systems are queried and how often. Three platforms — usually ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude — covered 55% of the sources used in our measurement. The other 45% sat with Perplexity, Grok and Meta AI.
2. Which measurement levels are recorded?
Being mentioned is not the same as being recommended, and being retrieved is something else again than being cited. An audit that only measures 'are you mentioned' misses where the difference lies. We record four levels: retrieval, citation, mention and recommendation.
3. Is the measurement reproducible?
Ask whether the same questions can be put again later. Without repetition you do not know whether a change is the result of your work or of a different moment. Also ask whether temporarily unavailable measurements are counted as zero or listed separately; that makes a considerable difference to the outcome.
4. One-time or subscription?
In this market pricing models vary strongly: one-time reports, monthly subscriptions and programmes on request. Work out what a first picture costs you. A one-time report is usually the cheapest starting point; a subscription only makes sense once you want to follow the development over months.
Frequently asked questions
- How many AI platforms should a good audit measure?
- As many as possible of the platforms your customers use. In our measurement of August 2026, 81% of the 319 sources used appeared on exactly one of the six platforms. Measuring on one platform shows roughly a sixth to a third of the picture, depending on which platform.
- What are the four measurement levels?
- Retrieval: was your page fetched. Citation: was it used as a source. Mention: is your brand named in the answer. Recommendation: are you actively recommended. A brand can be cited without being mentioned, and mentioned without being recommended.
- What does an AI visibility audit cost?
- Prices vary strongly, from one-time reports of a few tens of euros to programmes of hundreds of euros and monthly subscriptions. Our own Scan costs €29 one time, Pro €79 and Complete €149, all including VAT.
